Total Hours Required: RN / LPN 15 - 30 hours | Renewal Cycle: 2 Years

Virginia RN's and LPN's have a variety of options to satisfy continued competency requirements for renewal of an active license. Continuing educational course options include: 30 contact hours of CE relative to the practice of nursing OR 15 contact hours of CE plus 640 hours of active practice as a nurse

Required Courses

Virginia has no specific course requirements however all continuing education courses must be relevant to the practice of nursing.

License Expiration Dates

In Virginia, licensees born in even-numbered years renew their licenses by the last day of their birth month in even-numbered years, and licensees born in odd-numbered years renew their licenses by the last day of their birth month in odd-numbered years.

Audits and Retaining CE Records

"All licensess are required to maintain original documentation of completion for a period of two years following renewal and to provide such documentation within 30 days of a request from the board for proof of compliance".
