Insomnia symptoms are reported by a significant number of adolescents. This is concerning as the occurrence of insomnia can deprive adolescents of the attention and cognition required during this crucial stage of development. Additionally, insomnia symptoms have been associated with negative health outcomes, increased behavioral risk factors and suicide. This course discusses the epidemiology of insomnia, how the circadian system contributes to the process of sleep, the impact of insomnia, factors which contribute to insomnia, and treatment options available.

Educational Goals & Learning Outcomes

     The goal of this course is to increase the knowledge base of healthcare professionals regarding insomnia in adolescence including; the epidemiology of insomnia, how the circadian system contributes to the process of sleep, the impact of insomnia, factors which contributing to insomnia and treatment. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of insomnia

  • Appraise how the circadian system contributes to the process of sleep

  • Assess the impact of insomnia

  • Differentiate factors which contribute to insomnia

  • Compare treatments for insomnia

Dr. Innessa Michelle Donskoy, M.D. is affiliated with the Advocate Children's Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. Dr. Donskoy received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine; completed her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Illinois at Chicago and; completed her fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University Program Ann & Robert H. Dr. Darius A. Loghmanee, M.D. is affiliated with the Advocate Children's Hospital's at Park Ridge and Oak Lawn, Illinois, the Advocate Christ Medical Center, the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and the Advocate Sherman Hospital. Dr. Loghmanee received his medical degree from SUNY - Buffalo School of Medicine, Buffalo; completed his residency in Pediatrics at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago and; completed his fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the Rush University Medical Center, Chicago.
